Everybody needs beauty as well as bread.

If only California weren’t so beautiful with such clement weather and such breathtaking sights all up and down Highway 1! Only a hardened heart could shut out its charms. San Francisco couldn’t buy my affection. The skyscrapers in SoMa stood too tall, the poverty and privilege in the streets jarred too loudly, the tourists crowded everywhere numbered too many… but Marin County was all fog and rocky shorelines and daring switchbacks and towering redwoods and hot sand and frigid Pacific!
